How solar power works at home
The simple flow of solar, battery and grid energy around a home.
Solar panels on your roof make electricity when sunlight reaches them. An inverter then converts that electricity into the type your home can use.
On a sunny day, your home uses available solar first. If there is more solar than the home needs, a battery can charge if one is installed. Once the battery is full, remaining energy may be exported to the grid, subject to the property’s connection settings.
At night, or when demand is greater than the solar and battery can provide, the home imports electricity from the grid. That is why the right design is about more than fitting the most panels on the roof—it should suit how the household lives.
